Help Wanted

Applicants should present themselves clean, punctual, and in possession of reasonable sanity. Letters of introduction accepted if written legibly and by a living person.


1. Assistant Chimney Sweep

Work under Master Sootling in the north quarter. Duties include soot extraction, cat retrieval, and the prevention of spontaneous combustion.
Apply: Sootling & Sons Chimney Services, behind the Old Bakery, knock twice and cough once.


2. Nightsoil Collector (Part-Time)

Remove and dispose of waste from designated privies. Must have a strong constitution and an even stronger sense of purpose.
Apply: Department of Sanitary Management, Alley of Regrettable Trades.


3. Apprentice Apothecary

Grind herbs, stir tonics, and avoid confusing the jars labeled “Cure” and “Curse.”
Apply: Mistress Phiala’s Shop of Medicinal Curiosities, Lantern Street, before dusk.


4. Bridge Toll Clerk

Collect tolls with firmness and charm; discourage goats. Basic arithmetic essential.
Apply: Tollhouse at East Span Bridge, ask for Mr. Cray.


5. Town Clock Listener

Stand beneath public clocks to confirm that they still tick. Report irregularities, chimes, or the whispering of gears.
Apply: Clockmaker’s Guild, Side Door, present earplugs as token of seriousness.


6. Laundry Assistant for the Royal Barracks

Wash and fold uniforms, remove battle stains, and maintain confidentiality regarding mysterious scorch marks.
Apply: Quartermaster’s Annex, Barracks Lane.


7. Keeper of the Street Urns

Replace the flowers (or sticks) in decorative public urns weekly. Artistic eye preferred; fear of bees disqualifying.
Apply: Bureau of Beautification, Garden Court.


8. Official Listener for Complaints

Sit at a designated bench in the square and listen sympathetically to citizens’ grievances. Silence preferred to advice.
Apply: Civic Hall, Room 11, marked Grumblings & Dissatisfactions.


9. Bell Polisher for the Royal Carillon

Ascend tower ladders and polish each bell until reflection of face is visible. Singing optional but appreciated by pigeons.
Apply: Carillon Tower, South Wing, speak loudly to be heard.


10. Courier to the Monastery of Cold Ashes

Deliver correspondence through fog, wolves, and unmarked terrain. Excellent stamina and indifference to existential dread required.
Apply: Courier Station at West Gate, provide proof of last will.


11. Herb Cataloguer

Document all herbs in the royal apothecary gardens, including the ones that bite.
Apply: Garden Office, behind the Greenhouse of Moderate Peril.


12. Scribe for the Office of Minor Miracles

Record occurrences deemed “modestly inexplicable.” Must write neatly and maintain discretion.
Apply: Ministry of Small Wonders, Cloister Hall, Door 3½.


13. Lighthouse Cat Feeder (Temporary)

Feed and pet the cat residing in the Lantern of Westmarch during keeper’s illness. Pay modest; gratitude eternal.
Apply: Harbor Office, ask for Mrs. Brindle (again).


14. Ragpicker’s Apprentice

Sort usable cloth from the refuse of the city. Artistic temperament welcome but not mandatory.
Apply: Mott & Mottle Textile Recovery, Filth Lane.


15. Deputy Assistant for the Office of Bells & Notices

Aid in the hanging, posting, and occasional retrieval of public notices. Must read upright and not mind heights.
Apply: Town Hall Annex, second floor window (use ladder provided).
